When you pick items up, they appear in your inventory, the holding space for the loot you acquire while playing Diablo III. You can view your inventory by hitting the “I” key (PC) or through the character menu on Consoles (Xbox 360 and Xbox One: BACK; PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4: SELECT).
Looking at the image of your hero on the inventory page, you’ll see that you have different equipment slots on different parts of your character’s body (head, shoulders, neck, chest, waist, legs, feet, hands, rings, and arms).
To equip your hero with the items you’ve found, left-click on the item you want to equip and drag it to the appropriate slot (on PC, you can right-click or click and drag an item to the location, while on Consoles you’ll want to highlight the item and press the select button).
PC:
Below your active equipment, there are rows of boxes. When you pick up an item, it will appear here. Smaller items, such as potions and rings, take up a single box worth of space in your inventory, while larger items, like spears and shields, take up multiple boxes. It’s a good idea to manage your inventory so that you don’t run out of space.
Console:
The “Equipped” column on the right of the pane will display the items you currently have equipped, while the “Inventory” column will let you compare your equipped item to those in your inventory for the same slot. There is no need to manage and rearrange your inventory on Consoles, but you can use the Fast Equip function (D-Pad Up) while in the world to cycle through the last 10 items you picked up, and quickly choose what you want to equip.
Gold is the currency of Sanctuary, and you’ll find it scattered everywhere: in battered chests, on the bodies of fallen foes, and in forgotten tombs. You don’t have to click or select gold to pick it up; all you have to do is walk over it.
But gold isn’t the only currency you can find. The mysterious fragments known as blood shards can be exchanged for cryptic wares. You can learn more about blood shards and how to obtain and spend them in the Adventure Mode section.
In the course of your quest, you’ll accumulate a large quantity of treasures. You can check up on the status of your riches by opening your inventory (PC: “I” Key; Xbox 360 and Xbox One: BACK; PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4: SELECT). On Consoles, you have the option to mark items you pick up as ‘junk’, which allows you to quickly sell all marked items to merchants as a package (rather than selling them individually).
Merchants ply their trade in nearly every civilized area of Sanctuary (and some less-civilized parts, too). Merchants will pay you gold for items that you don’t want and sell you items from their inventory: armor, potions, shields, scrolls, blades, and just about anything else you might want or need. Most merchants are able to repair the durability of your items for an appropriate fee.
Merchants can help fill the gaps in your equipment while you are waiting for a more powerful piece of gear. The quality of their items varies, and while not every merchant will have the perfect item for your class and skillset, they take on new stock constantly, so it’s a good idea to check back with them regularly.
Your stash, a large chest located in town, is a place you can store equipment and other items you’d like to hang onto, but don’t need right away. It’s ideal for holding items you think you might use later or aren’t sure if you want to sell.
Your stash is shared between all of your characters. This means that if you’re playing your Barbarian, and you find an item that would be better suited to your Witch Doctor, you can drop the item into your stash, and your Witch Doctor will be able to take it when you play with that character.
If you need more room in your stash, you can buy space from the stash window.
You can customize your hero's appearance with collectible Portraits, Wings, Pets, and Pennants. Access the Collection pane by using the mirror icon on the main menu, or from within a game by selecting the Wardrobe in town (default key "F1"). You can unlock additional cosmetic items by gaining Paragon levels, participating in Seasons, and registering eligible Blizzard products, such as the Digital Deluxe Editions of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor.
Use the Armory to save your currently equipped items, skills, and Kanai’s Cube powers. You can save up to five different equipment setups. Any saved Armory set can be re-equipped later with a single button press. The Armory automatically swaps equipped items with those replacing them, but items that cannot be swapped (such as legendary gems) will return to your inventory instead.
